Interactive media – media with the possibility for direct feedback
dialogue with the audience. They are implemented using telephone, video, satellite and Internet communications, computer and video games. Interactive media work with user participation. In this case, media still serves the same purpose, but user input adds interaction and brings interesting features to the system for a better user experience.
The analog video disc developed by NV Philips was a pioneering technology for interactive media. In addition, there are several elements that have encouraged the development of interactive media, including the following:
- Laserdisc technology was first invented in 1958.This allowed the user to access high quality analog images on a computer screen. This has enhanced the capability of interactive video systems.
- The concept of a graphical user interface (GUI), developed in the 1970s, was mainly about visual metaphors, intuitive feel and information exchange on a virtual table. The extra power is the only thing you need to move into multimedia.
- Dramatic reductions in hardware costs and unprecedented growth in computer speed and memory have turned the personal computer into an affordable machine capable of combining audio and color video in cutting-edge ways.
- Another element is the release of Windows 3.0 in 1990 by Microsoft. This hastened the adoption of the graphical interface as a common mechanism for communicating with small computer systems.
- The development by NV Philips of optical digital technologies built on compact disc (CD) in 1979 is another leading element in interactive multimedia development as it raised the issue of interactive media development.
All previous elements contributed to the development of the underlying hardware and software systems used in interactive media.
Interactive media
is related to the concept of interaction design, new media, interactivity, human-computer interaction, cyber culture, digital culture, interactive design and includes augmented reality. An important feature of interactivity is that it is mutual: that the user, the machine actively interact with each other. Most interactive computing systems exist for some human purpose and interact with humans in human contexts. Manovich complains that “as applied to computer media, the notion of interactivity is a tautology. Therefore, calling computer media ‘interactive’ is meaningless – it just illuminates a fundamental fact about computers.” Interactive media is an example of a computational method influenced by the sciences of cybernetics, autopoetry and systems theories, as well as the complex concepts of mind and cognition, perception and memory, emotion and attachment. Any form of interface between the end user/audience and the environment can be considered interactive. Interactive media is not limited to electronic media or digital media. Board games, game books, flip books, and constellation wheels are examples of interactive media.
Books with simple content
or an index may be considered interactive due to the non-linear control mechanism in the environment, but they are generally considered non-interactive since most of the user’s experience is non-interactive reading.
